Social media is playing such a big part in our Internet usage these days,  with 15 million of our 24 million population here in Australia recorded to be on social media networking sites such as Facebook as of March 2016 (ABS Statistics).

Given the incredible interest on the social media landscape, Microsoft has been trying on and off for a few years to make a mark, with initial endeavours working on the Enterprise side of networking systems by taking over Yammer at a cost of 1.2 billion US Dollars four years ago.

In an announcement made last week, the company announced that it will be acquiring LinkedIn for a healthy 26.2 billion US dollars, with the hope to position it together with Microsoft Office 365 as a “leading professional cloud”.

The current brand will continue despite the acquisition, with the existing LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner remaining in control but reporting to Microsoft’s Satya Nadella.
