Corning Incorporated has been around for longer than you and I have, but have been the innovators for many of the things we use in our daily lives.

Kitchenware such as Corelle and Pyrex are manufactured under the famous brand, even our Internet is carried on Optical Fibre they have developed….but did you know they are Innovators in the field of Mobile Phone glass?

Many of the smartphones that we use today contain Gorilla Glass or variant, which in design theory is meant to have some resistance to damage so that we can have those occasional drops without breaking our displays….but the ultimate is we still manage to break it in some way.

Hope is not lost on the idea however, with news that Corning has unveiled version 4 of it’s Gorilla Glass technology to major developers around the world.

The latest edition of the glass technology maintains the same thickness and optical properties as well as scratch resistant, but can now guarantee that the glass plate can now withstand flat drops of 1m onto rough surfaces for at least 80% of cases.

With these developments we are getting closer to having phones that are capable of withstanding common day to day distress which ultimately for most of us results in none of those unfortunate repair bills to mend screens.

Corning has released a good video explaining the difference in glass types and demonstrates impact testingĀ on a few different uses of Gorilla Glass that features the stars of Mythbusters Adam & Jamie…worth a watch!
